Do I need a blog on my website?

We often get asked the question, “do I need a blog on my website?”

It’s a great question and the answer really depends on what you’re trying to achieve from your website. Our answer is pretty much always “YES”.

Why do I need a blog on my website?

Firstly, what’s the purpose of a blog on your website? For starters, it’s a great way to communicate with your visitors – tell them what you’re up to, promote any offers you have or reassure them why they should do business with you. If you have a particular sale, a new product, new advice on your specialised subject… tell your visitors in a well-written blog post.

Secondly, it also will help with those users staying on your website for longer by giving them more content to browse. Search engines, like Google and Bing, will generally judge high bounce rate (bounce rate is when someone visits one page of your site and leaves) as a negative thing – it could be perceived that the user felt like they were in the wrong place.

There are so many more SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) benefits to having a blog on your website. Search engines will always favour websites that are regularly updated over those that aren’t – an ‘up-to-date’ website is better than one that’s not. And by up-to-date, we mean updating the content more often.

Why is updating my website important?

If Google (we use Google as the main example as it’s the most used, but other search engines shouldn’t be forgotten about!) see two websites that are pretty much the same – same content, same number of visitors etc. – but one was updated last week and the other hasn’t been changed for years… it’s pretty obvious which one it’ll recommend – or rank higher.

Search engines crawls websites regularly to see if there have been any changes since the last time it visited and then re-indexes them if there has. It’s a very complex process but in essence, the more frequently your site is indexed, the better. So if every time they crawl your site and see no changes, they sees no reason to come back frequently. On the other hand, if there were changes, they might think ‘we need to come back more regularly to make sure we index these changes properly’.

Depending on what type of website you have, the majority of pages are likely not to need changing regularly. Take this website for example, our services very rarely change and we don’t want to change the content on each page unnecessarily. So blogs and informative news articles are the perfect way to keep the site fresh – as well as offering great insight to our visitors, which is something we love doing.

How do I know what to write about in my blog?
